Meet Kevin Coulston.
A cartoonist’s career, told through books, characters, and the pleasure of making pictures.

Books and original characters, brought together in person.
Drawing is the through line.
Kevin Coulston is a children’s book author, illustrator, cartoonist, and member of the National Cartoonists Society. He has published more than 100 books, moving between practical drawing activities and original illustrated stories.
Through FirstArtBooks, Kevin develops approachable art books built around his cartoon characters. How to Draw breaks a picture into stages. Trace Then Color offers an outline to follow and finish. Draw by Grid asks the artist to look closely, one square at a time. Shape Drawing Challenge leaves the destination open.
His story-led work includes Dylan McVillain, The Adventures of a 4th Grade Space Captain, and the picture-book series Alexis and the T-Rexes. Across those formats, character design remains central to how he tells a story.
Kevin also created the animated web series Bad Jokes with Ugly Folks. His credits span writing, direction, illustration, animation, character design, and editing, with voice performances by Rob Paulsen and Tara Strong.
Alongside publishing and animation, he teaches and demonstrates cartoon drawing for children. These live sessions turn the act of making a picture into something an audience can follow and try for themselves.
